Payroll Policy

Payroll Policy, Strategy & Technology for Generation Z – with Helen Hargreaves #013

Payroll Policy

Recorded live after the recent CIPP annual Excellent Conference and Awards in Birmingham at the Hilton Metropole (so please excuse the background noise), in this episode, “Payroll Policy, Strategy & Technology for Generation Z”, I sit down with Helen Hargreaves, Associate Director of Policy at the Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals  to discuss payroll legislation, payroll policy, payroll strategy and payroll technology. In particular, we consider how these core payroll fundamentals are adapting to the worlds changing workforce, in particular, ‘Generation Z’ and the Gig Economy.

The gig economy and “Generation-Z” are causing businesses to rethink how they approach business, engagement, policy and technology.  Payroll is no exception, and this is evident in new payroll services being offered and developed such as Pay-on-Demand.  Having spent over 27 years with the HMRC, Helen has a comprehensive background in payroll and has seen the industry change and adapt time and again to the changing demands of industry.  In this episode, we explore these changes in more detail.

There are few payroll professionals in the industry with more expertise in payroll so if you are passionate about payroll and the future, we recommend you download and subscribe to this episode and save it to your favourites!

Specifically, in this episode of The Payroll Podcast, we discover more about how to apply Payroll Policy, Strategy & Technology to our Changing Workforce, the gig economy and Generation Z including:

  • Results from CIPP research studies that are influencing change at Government level
  • How blockchain technology could influence the future of payroll
  • How and why the payroll industry continues to elevate itself to board level
  • How to develop payroll strategy to future-proof your payroll department
  • Brexit uncertainties and planning now for the future
  • The demands of a changing workforce on payroll
  • Why you can’t automate payroll positions
  • Why there will be an increased level of implementation in relation to ‘pay-on-demand’ services
  • How the gig economy and Generation Z are influencing current payroll trends
  • The CIPP policy and Research team and how you can get involved in shaping the future of the payroll industry

Achieving your Performance Goals

How to Achieve your Performance Goals – with Ryan Mathie – #012

Payroll Performance Goals

In this episode, “How to Achieve your Performance Goals” I am joined by Ryan Mathie, author of upcoming book “Holy F*ck Future” and highly experienced leadership and life performance coach who with over a decade’s worth of experience in developing the performance of CEOs and Directors through to industry professionals. Actors and Artists.

Ryan is considered to be one of the most highly trained and experienced leadership and performance coaches working in the industry right now.  In this episode of The Payroll Podcast, we endeavour to understand the motivations, desires and needs behind your payroll goals, results or aspirations.  Ryan provides listeners with powerful strategies and tools that you, the skilled payroll professional, can then utilise in order to achieve all of your professional payroll performance and personal aspirational goals.

The fact of the matter is, payroll is challenging.  Nearly every call a payroll professional receives is a complaint and the stress that payroll professionals can be put under can be overwhelming.  In addition, payroll professionals are rarely recognised at board level for the invaluable work they undertake in often very pressurised conditions.  This combination of factors can become a melting pot of emotions that can blur the path that will allow you to reach your payroll performance goals.  In this episode, Ryan Mathie talks to The Payroll Podcast about the seven key qualities required to deliver great leadership; the process you can apply that will unearth the true source of your motivations; and exactly how you can create more space in your life to provide you with the freedom you need to achieve all of your payroll career goals and all of your personal ambitions.

“Happiness is an outcome.  Success is an outcome.  An outcome is also known as a result.  We are results orientated human beings.  But the trick is to be clear about the results that you want…”

Your Payroll Performance journey starts here…

In this episode of The Payroll Podcast, we discover more about how you can achieve your payroll performance goals including:

  • How to apply a process that gets to the source of your motivations
  • How to create space, clarity and a profound new understanding of yourself and your goals.
  • How to tap into new thinking that will generate enormous power and an energy which will help drive you to cause the results that matter to you the most
  • How to handle and own payroll complaints so that they empower and motivate you
  • How to embrace creative and innovative thinking and use this in a professional context to achieve more
  • How to rethink the way you approach interviews
  • How to become an unstoppable leader and the 7 qualities that define great leadership
  • How to develop a strategy for payroll promotion or change
  • How to partner with senior stakeholders that results in them working with you to achieve united goals
  • How to achieve all of your payroll performance goals and lead a happier, more fulfilled life in the process.

We hope you enjoy this ‘Achieving your Payroll Performance Goals’ episode of The Payroll Podcast!  If you know anyone else who works in payroll, then please, share this episode with your friends and get them to subscribe today!

LMS with Shaun Wilde

Solving Payroll & HR Workforce Challenges with LMS – with Shaun Wilde, #07

LMS ThumbnailIn today’s fast-paced work environment, it has become essential for businesses to keep teams up to speed with the latest trends and methods but, in payroll, with everything else to manage, how can you possibly find the time to train your team effectively?  This is where LMS can help.

In this episode of The Payroll Podcast, Nick Day speaks with Shaun Wilde, CEO of Think Learning, a leading Learning Management Systems (LMS) platform provider.

If you are a payroll manager who is too overworked to be able to commit additional time and resources to train and upskill your existing teams, then LMS could be the solution.
Shaun has recently been responsible for leading the scale-up of ‘Think Associates’ to its new business name of ‘Think Learning’ with a vision to empower organisations to create safer and better places to work through the implementation of Totara Learn and e-learning services.

Shaun boasts decades of experience helping clients to develop consistent learning approaches that have helped businesses to improve training analysis, engagement, career development, reporting and compliance while reducing organisational risk.

With the recent introduction of the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulations) and with payroll and HR compliance and processes changing at an ever-increasing pace, this may be the perfect time to understand how and why LMS solutions are now more popular than ever! Shaun helps listeners to understand how LMS platforms can both accelerate change and support organisations to engage their workforce in learning and development.

Shaun explains how LMS solutions can improve reporting, security, analytics, compliance, HR processes, onboarding, inductions, training, governance, performance appraisals, leadership programs and even health and safety.

Like any implementation project, Shaun shares his vast experience in project management methodologies, data cleansing, engagement and best practice processes to ensure successful outcomes are achieved. We also discover more about Shaun’s love of OCR (Obstacle Course Racing), his experience as a choir boy and as a junior army team kayak champion and why he thinks, on the whole, humans are completely bonkers!

If you want to find out more about how technology such as learning management systems can affect your world, then this is the payroll podcast episode for you.

Working Well Hari Kalymnios ThumbnailHari Kalymnios is a wellness expert and author of three thought-jarring books – “The Thought Gym”, “The Super Journal” and more recently, “Working Well“.

With Health Awareness month upon us, I felt that this would be a great time to release this podcast as I get to witness first-hand just how stressed payroll and HR professionals are right now and I appreciate the pressures you are facing. In fact, the reality is that across all professions of the industry many employees are working under increased levels of stress.

We are in the grip of a stress epidemic.

However, there is hope! In this episode of the Payroll Podcast, Hari offers efficient and practical steps for changing habitual patterns that may be affecting our state of wellbeing. You will hear about several strategies you can implement right not to improve your wellness.

As our lives get busier and busier, boundaries between work and leisure blur and we spend less time thinking about what we’re putting our bodies through. If you work in payroll or HR, you are probably reading this and thinking “that’s me”!

The reality is that this fast-living is resulting in a pandemic of ‘ill-being’: from general weariness and ‘feeling under the weather’ to prolonged bouts of sickness, lethargy and sharp increases in stress, depression and mental health issues. Cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes and chronic lung diseases are now the four main causes of non-communicable disease death, making up around 70% of all deaths (around 17 million) across the world each year. By the year 2030, the figure will top 24 million.

The way we’re working isn’t working.

Hari teaches listeners on the Payroll Podcast how they can “unlock your inner superhuman” and be “on point” – mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually so you can be the best payroller, HR leader, entrepreneur, employee, colleague, parent, friend or human that you can be. To do this Hari shows you how first, you can need become the master of yourself.

Changing your thinking is the first step towards any change – especially if you want to achieve high performance.

Hari has trained corporates and entrepreneurs across the world to help them achieve improved focus, productivity, resilience, relationships, happiness, health, vitality and energy.
Here is what Phil James (https://twitter.com/philjms), CEO of the Institute of Leadership & Management had to say about Hari’s most recent book, “Working Well“:

“It’s time we took ourselves, that is our mind and bodies more seriously. Working Well asks us to do just that. Read this book, crease its pages, wear it out, share it and most of all act. Do something different and start working well today.”
